Siri’s concern grew the longer they stood idly in the Council Chambers. ( Concern, not worry. ) It was precautionary concern for a fellow Jedi and a friend, not worry that he could not handle himself, or even worry that something was terribly wrong. A lack of communication was not in itself reason to worry. ( His Padawan’s senses, however… )

As Adi spoke up again, her suggestion was received with a murmur of disagreement throughout the Council, but a nod — of thanks, of understanding — from Siri. Adi understood, Siri knew. The others on the High Council may not have had reason to remember so vividly a circumstance when they were separated from their Padawan — or Master — without means of communication, and the utter reliance that was then placed on the strength of the bond between Master and Padawan. But Adi surely remembered. Siri remembered.

If there was something the matter that endangered Obi-Wan, it was their responsibility ( their obligation ) to ensure his safety. I am suggesting reconnaissance only, Siri, Adi reiterated, eyes only on her former Padawan now, boring into her the reminder of the necessity to follow the mandate of the Council exactly in this.

Yes, Master. Even years after she’d been Knighted and taken her own Padawan, Siri still continued to call Adi Master. It was a habit she doubted she’d ever break. She would do as she was asked; it was Adi who was requiring this of her. And Adi who was siding with her when she did not have to.

And you have asked to take responsibility for another Master’s Padawan. You know what this means.

Another nod.  It is as though he were my own. There was a beat, a brief pause. ( Forgive me, Ferus. )  I will leave Ferus here at the Temple, if the Council is concerned about my ability to be responsible for both Padawans on this mission.

ANAKIN’S BREATHING DOES a stutter-stop in his chest, old doubt edging each inhale. He hadn’t truly expected Siri’s presence to deter the Council’s earlier decision, && had it not been for her ties to Master Gallia, he’s sure he would’ve  been sent away for second time. The Council is nothing if not ascetic, especially in response to something they’d written off as a trivial case of separation anxiety.

❝ Then it is decided, ❞ Mace frowns, not bothering to obscure his disapproval. ❝ Master Tachi will travel to Bamayar with Padawan Skywalker to investigate. ❞ He leans forward, eyes intense && tone warning. ❝ You are to report your findings to the Council && immediately return to Coruscant for debriefing. If something truly has gone awry in the negotiations it is not your mission to go after Master Kenobi. Is that clear? ❞ He angles that last part at Anakin, whose hands bunch into involuntary fists at the implication. He holds a sharp retort between his teeth, but Obi-Wan’s safety is more important than his unrelieved resentment towards Mace Windu.

     ❝ Yes Masters. ❞

❝ Good. I’m giving you both forty-eight hours to report your findings. You’re due back in three days. We’ll have a ship prepared for you. Until then, dismissed. ❞
