the  suddenness  of  his presence harkens something that smells like  unrest.  it curls in her nose like coppery war cries  &  plucks at her authority like pills on wool.  her fingers wrap around the whorled wood knobs of her throne  ;  her knuckles stretch tight  &  white  &  impatient to protect her hard-won peace.

❛  the threat at the mountain is high.  ❜   the statement rings clear  &  loud enough to rebound at the back of the chamber.  ❛   they have taken both members of skaikru  &  our own.  azgedakru  &  trikru alike are prisoners in the belly of the mount.  ❜

red  acid  boiling through the breezy forests  PROMISES  there will be more deaths, prickles discomfort along the nape of her neck where the infinity symbol of her station winds.  she cannot afford to be  careless  with the lives of her people.

❛  we will move on mount weather as one,  joining  our forces with skaikru.  ❜  a slim curve of her brow dares him to pose a challenge.  ❛  you are welcome to fight at our side to protect the kongeda.  &  sankru may send aide.  we will discuss further arrangements once all parties are safe.  ❜   palms pry up, fold neatly in her lap.  ❛  i trust that is tor your satisfaction.  ❜

HIS HAND FALLS upon the pommel of his sword, cradling the worn fabric that serves as his weapon’s grip. A patina of dirt comes away on his palm, a reminder of the trek he’d made across the desert && forest only a few hours before.

Anakin realizes his exhaustion now, in the face of a stranger-ruler’s defensive posturing. She worries her word won’t be followed, as she should. Commander Lexa faces a new enemy, something still relatively unknown. No leader can order their men into a dark abyss && expect all of them to obey. Warriors fear death more acutely than any other; that’s why they fight. && it’s also why they run when presented with a battle they don’t think they can win.

❝ It doesn’t matter what I think. ❞ The extent of Sankru’s commitment to the cause isn’t for Anakin to decide. Right now, he’s little more than a glorified messenger. ❝ But what does matter is how prepared your forces are. Do the Skaikru have many warriors in their ranks? How many strong are you? ❞ It’s clear from his words he’s well-versed in warfare, bred to bleed on the battleground, just like the rest of them. ❝ We have to know what kind of sacrifice the Sankru will have to make if we’re to win this. My commander won’t send his people to die if there’s no chance that some of them will survive. ❞
