she recognizes her place of privilege, knows that anyone else in her place would be dead or well on their way to the grave. his hand, in the force, around her throat would be a tender mercy. her own emotions are so scattered that padmé can’t settle on one or the other, to seek to understand or manipulate, or to try and find the good inside the shell of the man. does he place that this is her flaw now, that she’s fallen prey to emotions that run like a tempest. that she is a FIRE given form in her own right now: she doesn’t need him for warmth.

maybe padmé knows why he asked if her weapon was registered. but some part of her hardened heart still thought the monolith before her every inch the boy they’d found on tattooine.

he’s beside her in what feels like seconds, and shouting just soon. she expects it though, her shoulders steeled she turns to him. there’s a layer that she has shed. the light in her eyes is all PADMÉ, his once wife, the angry girl who’d lost herself in the woman she’d become. he brings it out in her.         “the price? you paid? the ONLY person you SAVED me from is the emperor, and even that’s debatable. think of our children, ani!”

——     she seems startled with herself. it’s a slip, such a large one that she immediately feels her temper cool. she comes to pull her mask off again, so that he might see the grim set of her lips, watch her speak… and because the modulation in her voice feels FORCED right now.

“i fault myself for what you became. of course i do. i lived in this… FLAWED heads pace. i thought i could SAVE you, and you needed someone who didn’t feel that you needed FIXING. the mental image of me, that you had, that the rebels have. i was SELFISH and wrong and goddess, i live in a world of ‘should haves.’ i’ve been doing bounties for the empire for nearly TWENTY years.”

HE SNARLS ON instinct, but then freezes, breath hitching, the shock of it sinking into his blood like the spread of warmth, or ice

Vader goes tight && sharp as a blade. The endearment is mined with triggers of old pain. To hear her say it again almost invokes the memory of how it sounded when she’d loved him. But that, like everything else they had, is gone

               Almost everything else.

❝ Sidious led me to believe that the Council was using me for my power, && that you were destined to die in childbirth. ❞ The mechanical cycle of his breathing harrows away at the silence as he deliberates his words. It has been twenty years, but Vader can’t imagine she would appreciate any kind justification for his deeds. Sidious bent his mind, made him unable to connect && reflect upon all the portents around him. He had not meant to be cruel, but that does not mean that he was kind. && Before long, Sidious’ withering touch began prod && pierce, && angle towards his core— && when it finally rooted in deep it left only shadows && sharp teeth behind.

❝ The visions… he likely sent them to me to drive him to his side. ❞ It worked. ❝ I believed that swearing myself to him was the only way to save you, but he— ❞ He broke something in me, Padmé. He broke me. ❝ I didn’t want to live without you. ❞ I never did. I still don’t.

Vader clenches his fists to keep from reaching out to her again. ❝ If that’s true, I am surprised we didn’t cross paths sooner. ❞ She, like Obi-Wan, it seems, had perfected the art of hiding from him. ❝ Sidious groomed me to be his apprentice since I’d first arrived on Coruscant. Perhaps he had intended it even before then. What he’d planned, it was bigger than us. ❞ He unfurls his fingers as if to gesture to the current state of the galaxy. ❝ You couldn’t save me. No one could. ❞
